The 1930’s brought the Great Depression; luxury items were not sought after because it was more important to put food on the table. While rubies and diamonds took a hit in this era, the creativity of many jewelers came to the forefront.
These jewelers started creating jewelry with less expensive material and this era of jewelry is known as Depression Era jewelry. Costume jewelry decorated in rhinestones kept the jewelry business alive. While the jewelry was about as basic as you could get, it still sparkled and brought wearers some sense of normalcy to difficult times.
