City of Killeen, Texas - Government This is the third year that Killeen has celebrated veterans as hometown heroes, and once again, my name’s missing from the banners in downtown Killeen. Now, I’m not saying I’m bitter—well, maybe a little. I mean, how many people do you know who can say they were born in Killeen, went to high school here, served in the military here, and then retired here? I might be the poster child for “never left,” and maybe that’s impressive—or maybe it just means I need to dream a little bigger. But honestly, whether or not my face ever makes it onto a banner in downtown Killeen, this town is and always will be home. It’s the place that shaped me, for better or worse.
