Hesty is expecting her first baby any day now, and here at DZCA, we've been doing everything we can to help this first-time mom prepare. Animal Care Specialist Kendall, who is also expecting her second baby later this summer, has been right there alongside her every step of the way. 🦧 The similarities between orangutan and human pregnancies are truly remarkable. Orangutans share more than 96% of their DNA with humans, have monthly cycles just like us, and carry their babies for around nine months, which is why we can even use human pregnancy tests with orangutans like Hesty! Just like a human mom preparing for birth, Hesty has been participating in weekly ultrasounds, working through some morning sickness, and training with a stuffed animal to practice carrying and caring for her newborn.
