The newest version of the Interstate 10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project is now a $3.2 billion effort. Phase one includes constructing a new bridge and restriping the existing 7.5-mile Bayway to three lanes in each direction. Phase two does not yet have a cost estimate but involves demolishing the existing Bayways and replacing it with a new interstate structure. This version of the project follows rising construction costs over the past five years, slowed progress and raised concerns among local officials about when groundbreaking would occur. The massive project, among the most expensive in Alabama’s history, will also require motorists to pay slightly higher tolls than those approved by local officials five years ago.
