Alabama Birth Center co-founders Dr. Yashica Robinson and clinic manager Elisabeth Nussel warn that birthing centers in Alabama could be forced to shut down as the state supreme court recently declined to hear a lawsuit challenging health department regulations for the centers. Back in 2023, birthing centers in Alabama sued the state Department of Public Health, arguing its rules for the centers are so burdensome that they won’t be able to operate at all. A judge in Montgomery ruled that birth centers should not be subject to as many regulations as hospitals. But earlier this year, the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals unanimously ruled in favor of the Alabama Department of Public Health. Because the Alabama Supreme Court declined to hear the case, the appeals court ruling stands. #alabama #birth #pregnancy #maternalmortality
