For Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan tracked down real Spitfires from 1940 and flew them over the English Channel on camera. Several of the civilian boats in the evacuation scenes actually made the crossing to Dunkirk during the real operation 86 years earlier. Some were crewed by descendants of the people who originally sailed them. Not actors playing heroes. Families finishing what their grandparents started.
