Nobel Prize winning chemist Omar Yaghi has developed a solar powered atmospheric water harvesting system that can produce up to 1,000 liters of clean water per day under favorable conditions. The technology uses highly porous materials called metal organic frameworks to capture moisture from the air, even in very dry climates. Sunlight or low grade heat then releases the trapped water, providing an off grid source of drinking water for water scarce and disaster affected regions.
