There’s an epidemic in our community, and we need to talk about it. Too many of our loved ones are dying from lifestyle diseases that, in many cases, are preventable. I’m talking about conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and obesity. These are hitting the Black community hard, and earlier than they should. The truth is, small habits done consistently can change everything. Movement is one of the most powerful (and free) tools we have. Yet so many of us are sitting too much, moving too little, and building our lives around food-centered gatherings. What if we shifted that? Every get-together doesn’t have to revolve around eating. Go for a walk. Take a nature walk. Try a light hike. Move together first then enjoy a meal if needs must. Start where you are.
