This is called immediate pigment darkening. It's the oxidation of existing melanin as it tries to protect you from UV. It can happen with visible light too, and it can happen even when you're wearing sunscreen.⁠ ⁠ Important distinction: immediate pigment darkening is not the same as a tan.
