Printed threads strip out. Tap a hole into PLA and you get maybe three insertion cycles before the plastic gives up. Heat-set inserts solve this by turning a weakness of thermoplastics into a feature: they melt on demand.
A brass insert sits on the tip of a soldering iron, heated to around 200-250°C. Pressed into a slightly undersized boss, it conducts heat into the surrounding polymer, driving it above its glass transition and into a viscous, flowable state. The plastic reflows around the insert’s external knurling and barbs, then solidifies as it cools, mechanically locking the brass in place. What you’re left with is a metal thread anchored in a solidified polymer matrix that has flowed into every groove.
The geometry does the work:
- Opposed knurl patterns resist both pull-out (axial) and torque-out (rotational) loads
- Tapered or barbed profiles let molten plastic flow above the barb, then trap it
