Meghna Iyer joined a research lab in her first year at Georgia Tech, determined to understand her mother’s ALS diagnosis. In Cassie Mitchell’s lab, she helped use AI to analyze 36 million scientific papers and uncover connections between ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, and frontotemporal dementia. This information could help researchers study the diseases together instead of separately. Meghna graduated in May and is the first author on a published study documenting her work — a rare accomplishment for an undergraduate. Her mother passed away before watching her daughter receive her diploma.
