They returned. Daniel did not. According to arrest affidavits and police reporting, 19-year-old Lucas Roper and a juvenile allegedly failed to report Daniel’s drowning, left the scene in Daniel’s car, discarded his clothing and cellphone, and deleted messages connected to him. Both have been charged with tampering with physical evidence. Let me be clear: even without jumping ahead of the evidence, those alleged actions were wrong. You do not leave someone in the water.
