More than 143,000 Arizonans had genetic data exposed in the 23andMe breach—and some of that information was later listed for sale on the dark web. 🧬🚨 The 2023 breach affected 6.9 million customers worldwide, exposing a range of personal information that, in some cases, included genetic ancestry data. Arizona officials say 23andMe failed to use basic safeguards against common password attacks, missed suspicious login activity and did not properly respond to massive spikes in attempted logins. Arizona has now joined 41 other states in an $18 million settlement, with the state receiving $612,269 in civil penalties. Because 23andMe filed for bankruptcy, the recovery is limited to funds available through the bankruptcy estate.
