Arizona is building a 100-foot-wide bridge over I-17—but it won’t be for cars. 🦌 The Willard Springs Wildlife Overpass is under construction about 12 miles south of Flagstaff, giving elk, deer and other animals a safer route across one of Northern Arizona’s busiest highways. The $15.8 million project will also add roughly eight miles of 8-foot-tall fencing to guide wildlife toward the overpass and existing crossings. Construction began in spring 2025 and is expected to wrap up in fall 2026. Wildlife crossings elsewhere in Arizona have already produced major results. Along U.S. 93, crossings built for bighorn sheep have helped reduce wildlife-related crashes by more than 90%—but that figure does not apply to every crossing statewide.
