Thinking Machines Lab, founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, has released its first AI model: Inkling. Instead of trying to build the model that tops every benchmark, the company is taking a different approach. Inkling is a 975 billion parameter open weight model that activates just 41 billion parameters per task, making it significantly more efficient than its total size suggests. It was trained on 45 trillion multimodal tokens spanning text, images, audio, and video, and developers are free to download, customize, and fine tune it for their own use cases. The company openly acknowledges that Inkling is not the strongest model available today. That honesty is part of its strategy.
