Just two years after emergency brain surgery threatened to derail his future, 19-year-old Tequan Ellis has received Hanover’s Governor General’s Achievement Award and is now pursuing his dream of becoming a neurosurgeon. Only days after completing his Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations in 2024, Ellis expected to be preparing for one of the proudest moments of his young life, graduating as valedictorian of Cornwall College’s grade-11 class. Instead, he found himself in a hospital bed after doctors discovered a brain abscess that required emergency surgery.
