The person who decides your monthly home loan repayment in Namibia does not sit in Windhoek. They sit in Pretoria. N$ has been pegged 1:1 to the rand since 1993. The upside is stability. The cost is control: South Africa's central bank sets the interest rate, and Namibia follows, even when it does not suit the local economy. The sting: over the last 10 years Namibia's economy grew around 12%, South Africa's about 6%. Twice as fast, yet Pretoria still sets the rate. Oil could change that. First production is expected around 2029 at roughly 300,000 barrels a day, earning USD, not rand. Botswana did exactly this: it left the rand in 1976 and floated the pula a decade later, once reserves could cover a year of imports. Today the pula is one of Africa's most trusted currencies. Is it time for Namibia to have this conversation, or still too early to let go of the peg? #Namibia #Oil #RandPeg #AfricanMarkets #Botswana
