Is there hope for coral reefs?
Corals get most of their energy (and colour) from algae living inside their tissue. When the water gets too warm, the algae turn toxic, so the coral expels them to survive, losing its main food source in the process. They can recover from this, but as bleaching becomes more frequent, it’s often too much to handle.
Mass bleaching events barely existed before 1998. Before that, there were only a few localized cases documented here and there, nothing like what we’re seeing today. In the last 25 years, bleaching events have become almost a yearly occurrence, and reefs simply can’t recover from wave after wave of it.
Scientists have found that some corals and algae tolerate heat better than others. One organization,
@CoralGardeners, is already using this to regrow reefs with hardier coral, bringing hope that this may not be the end for coral reefs.
We made a short film telling the story of Coral Gardeners. Watch it now at the link in our bio!
