Growing up in Livingston, NJ, jewelry was always a part of Carrig’s life. Her mother, a Mexican immigrant, married into an Italian family that owned a jewelry company specializing in home parties. Jewelry was woven throughout her childhood and she still has pieces her parents made for her as a baby. As she got older, Carrig experienced bullying from classmates at school. During the hardest times, she turned to beading to cope. She’d make bracelets with words like “laugh” or “breathe” to help her navigate through tough times.
Later, when Carrig found herself at The College of New Jersey, she connected with sisters in her sorority who made her feel seen and supported in ways she hadn’t felt before.
