Today marks the New Year celebration in the Māori lunar calendar, and it’s a time for reflecting on the past; making the most of the present; and preparing for the future. It also marks a time to send the souls of those who we’ve lost since the last rising of the Matariki star cluster to the cosmos by just saying their name to the stars - it’s an emotional and cathartic practice - and so much of the Māori culture is rooted in the connection to nature, to the earth, the water, the skies, the animals, the plants, and its people.
