Before Christopher Nolan brought The Odyssey to the screen, University of Cincinnati archaeologists helped establish the real-world foundation behind Homer’s epic. 🎥 UC professor Carl Blegen led groundbreaking excavations at Troy and Pylos that provided scientific evidence about the ancient sites connected to the legendary story. Today, UC Classics researchers Jack Davis and Sharon Stocker are building on that legacy through continued work in Pylos, Greece. 🪏 Their work includes the Griffin Warrior tomb, weapons, armor, jewelry, and later princely tombs that continue to reveal new details about Mycenaean civilization. Part of Nolan’s film was also shot in Pylos, bringing renewed attention to the region and its history.
