When a club sells an academy product and recognises it as pure profit, there will be a moment of satisfaction and most likely relief, followed by a thought of "I hope he doesn’t go on to be a world beater."
Why relief? Well, in a paradoxical world of financial compliance and an obsession with spending money, the sale of academy products can get you off the hook.
That is, until that academy player becomes a superstar at their new club and your fire sale of a talent you developed from 8 years old to pay for 3 unproven 21 year old internationals with an attractive set of stats bites you in the a**.
Newcastle will be feeling the full pain of a deal that, at the time, may have allowed them to recognise £35m in pure profit, but in just a few short years has cost them a whole lot of millions more.
Not to mention the on-field value they have missed out on in letting him leave in the first place!
