A lot of people see the surname Al-Masri and assume it automatically means someone is Egyptian today, but that’s not what it means. In Arabic, Al-Masri translates to “the Egyptian.” It’s a traditional surname that originally identified someone or their ancestors as coming from Egypt. Over generations, the name spread throughout Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and other parts of the Arab world, where families carry it regardless of their nationality. That’s why Palestinian middle-distance runner Layla Almasri, who represents Palestine, has the surname Almasri without being Egyptian. Like many Arabic family names, it reflects ancestral or historical family origins rather than a person’s present-day citizenship or national identity. It’s similar to how NBA legend and basketball player of the Chicago Bulls Michael Jordan and the country of Jordan. • #nbamemes #sportsmemes #trackandfield #michaeljordan #palestine
