Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday as Beirut seeks U.S. support to stabilize southern Lebanon and build on a U.S.-backed framework agreement aimed at ending months of fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group.
It is the first visit by a Lebanese president to the White House since 2009. Aoun is expected to press for Israeli troops to withdraw from parts of southern Lebanon they continue to occupy and for additional support for the Lebanese military as it works to assert full control over areas long influenced by Hezbollah.
