What is the meaning behind this story? ⤵️ Agostino Chigi, the wealthy banker who built the villa, commissioned Raphael to paint the story of Cupid and Psyche because it reflected his own turbulent private life. In particular, the story echoed his relationship with Francesca Ordeaschi, a courtesan he met in Venice who was the young daughter of a humble merchant. Their relationship was considered inappropriate because of the difference in their social status. The same was true of Cupid and Psyche. Psyche was a mortal woman, while Cupid belonged to the divine world. They came from two completely different worlds.
