If your voice sounds thinner in recordings than it does in your head, mic distance is probably the culprit.
The proximity effect is a real acoustic phenomenon. The closer you are to a directional mic, the more it boosts the low frequencies in your voice, giving you that warm, full sound you hear from professional voice actors. Six inches is a solid starting point for most condenser mics, but experiment closer for a richer tone. Just watch your plosives the closer you get, and make sure a pop filter is in your setup.
