🦈 A new shark species just walked onto the scene. Scientists have described a new species of walking shark from Papua New Guinea, bringing the total number of known walking shark species to 10! Walking sharks are among the most unique sharks on Earth. Found only in the waters around Australia and New Guinea, these small sharks use their fins to “walk” along the seafloor and are known for occupying remarkably small geographic ranges. The expedition that led to this discovery was headed by Re:wild’s Shark Conservation Director, Mark Erdmann, one of the world’s leading authorities on walking sharks, who has previously described three other new species of walking shark.
