Bhupen Khakhar, India’s first Pop artist, is celebrated today as a maverick in South Asian painting. Here, Specialist Deeksha Nath examines his enigmatic 1988 landscape on view at #SothebysLondon. This untitled painting shows two nude men in tender embrace, enclosed within a rocky enclave. This sparse scene reflects Khakhar’s interest in desire, vulnerability and the experience of living between disclosure and concealment. See this work and other paintings by Khakhar in the South Asia Edit, a series of exhibitions at our New Bond Street galleries through 7 August. Tap the link in bio to plan your visit.
