Researchers from University College London analyzed genetic data, brain scans, and sleep habits from more than 370,000 people and found that habitual nappers tend to have a larger total brain volume. The difference was equivalent to about 2.6 to 6.5 fewer years of age related brain shrinkage, suggesting that regular napping may help preserve brain health as we grow older. Scientists believe short naps may help the brain perform essential maintenance processes. During sleep, the brain clears metabolic waste products, consolidates memories, and restores neural function. A brief daytime nap can also improve alertness and reduce cognitive fatigue. The study does not prove that napping directly enlarges the brain, but it does suggest a beneficial relationship between regular napping and healthier brain aging.
