Neptune's auroras are created when charged particles from the Sun are trapped by the planet's magnetic field and collide with gases in its upper atmosphere, causing them to glow in infrared light. Unlike Earth's auroras, Neptune's magnetic field is highly tilted and offset from its center, so its auroras appear near the planet's mid latitudes rather than its poles. They remained elusive for decades until the James Webb Space Telescope captured them in unprecedented detail.
