Megalophobia is thought to arise from the brain's ancient threat detection systems. Throughout evolution, unusually large objects often signaled danger, from towering predators to massive natural forces like cliffs or storms. Our brains are wired to pay extra attention to things that dwarf us because they may pose a risk. People with megalophobia experience this response more intensely, causing feelings of fear or anxiety when confronted with enormous structures, statues, ships, or skyscrapers.
