Transparent solar panels work by absorbing ultraviolet and infrared light while allowing most visible light to pass through. Since human eyes can only detect visible wavelengths, the panels appear transparent even though they are still harvesting energy from sunlight.
When these invisible wavelengths strike the photovoltaic material, they excite electrons and generate an electric current, just like conventional solar panels. The key difference is that the materials are engineered to selectively capture only certain parts of the solar spectrum.
Scientists use specialized semiconductors, transparent electrodes, and wavelength selective coatings to achieve this effect. Although they are currently less efficient than traditional solar panels, they could eventually turn windows, skyscraper facades, and electronic displays into electricity generating surfaces.
