For nearly seven decades, the goal Pelé described as the greatest of his career survived only through the memories of those who witnessed it.
On August 2, 1959, the 18-year-old Santos star produced an extraordinary solo goal at Estádio da Rua Javari in São Paulo. He flicked the ball over three defenders in succession, never letting it touch the ground, before finishing with a header. The moment was never filmed, leaving just a single photograph as visual evidence.
Now, Google DeepMind has recreated the legendary goal in video form in collaboration with Pelé's family and the team managing his legacy.
To make the reconstruction as faithful as possible, historian Anita Lucchesi and her researchers analyzed nearly 2,000 historical sources and interviewed people who were present at the match to piece together every detail.
