As you sit in the pew and gaze upon the familiar view before you, let us give you a closer look at two mesmerizing features – the wood reredos and the Chancel window. Against the front wall stands the wood reredos, or altar screen. The darker outer frame, original Appalachian oak, bears witness to time. The inner lighter wood panels replaced the red silk damask during the renovation of 1978. At the center, a hand-tooled wooden crucifix takes center stage, flanked by hand-carved angels. The grand canopy once concealed the tabernacle, now a nod to our evolving sacred space. As you gaze above, the Chancel window is a masterpiece planned by color rather than content. Facing the congregation, opaque hues were chosen to eliminate glare, with a predominant calming blue, associated with the Blessed Virgin.
