The next installment of our Art & Architecture series shines a spotlight on the beautifully crafted oak pulpit, or as it's known, the ambo. Adorning this remarkable piece are three carved figures, each symbolizing the unwavering dedication to the Church's teachings and the art of preaching. St. Basil the Great (top photo) championed the Eastern Church and laid the foundations for the monastic system. St. Augustine of Hippo (middle photo) became a Western Church luminary, renowned for his writings and oratory skills. St. John Chrysostom (bottom photo) served as the Bishop of Constantinople and was celebrated as the prince of orators. On the front of the pulpit near the microphone is an eagle, also a symbol of the Holy Spirit, although somewhat uncommon. It symbolizes a feeling of being lifted up on eagle’s wings by the Holy Spirit when the Gospel is read, but it also may be a reflection of the spirit of patriotism that swept the US during the World War II. #artandarchitecture #pu...
