Three men were tied for the lead with 1k to go at the 2021
@ncaatrackfield DI Cross Country Championships 10 days ago in Tallahassee, Florida: Athanas Kioko of
@gocamelsrun, Wesley Kiptoo of
@cyclonetrackxc & Conner Mantz of
@byutrackfieldxc.
By the time the race hit "The Wall" for the final time at Apalachee Regional Park, it was either going to be Mantz making it two in a row or the unheralded Kioko emerging as champion.
Kioko made the first move; Mantz answered with the final one.
Mantz, who was named National Men's Athlete of the Year on Monday, powered home to win by more than five seconds and set an overall course record of 28:33.1. What might be even more impressive was how even Mantz ran that day - 14:16.4 on the 1st 5k, 14:16.7 on the 2nd 5k.
