Mary Edwards Walker (1832-1919) was an American surgeon, women’s rights advocate, abolitionist and—suspected Union spy. She Graduated for Syracuse Medical College in 1855. During the Civil War, she became the first female surgeon in the US Army and worked in the field. Recently divorced, she refused the position of nurse, and worked as an unpaid field surgeon. She was imprisoned by the Confederate army. She is the only woman in U.S. history to receive the Presidential Medal of Honor for her service. The award was later REVOKED and she refused to return it.
