I will never forget this woman at a Pre-tenure woman conference. She was sitting alone, I sat at her table, talked 1 minute then she stood up and said 'oh there are my friends!' then left me at the table. Pretty much why I stopped going to conferences--In conferences I shake random hands for people like ‘nice to meet you I’m going to go off with my friends now’. Generally people express 0 interest in my ideas, take my card with 0 intention of following up. I’m not invited to private dinners, or behind the scenes networking.
