The Portland Timbers returned to Providence Park Wednesday night after a two-month break for the World Cup. Timbers fans were treated to some electrifying moments on and off the field during the game, thanks to a rare Portland summer lightning storm.
Trailing 2-1 heading toward stoppage time, Timbers forward Felipe Mora checked into the match and lit up the stands — and the summer night sky — with his equalizer in the 92nd minute.
As celebratory green smoke filled the stadium, lightning ignited the sky above Providence Park shortly after Mora’s strike in the box. The moment was captured beautifully from the stands and shared with us by Timbers fan Brittany McClain.
