Europe's glaciers are melting at an accelerated rate amidst a widespread heatwave, as temperatures reach over 40 degrees Celsius in many areas. “Glacier loss day" is an annual day, in which the year's accumulated snow and ice will have completely melted. According to ETH Zurich glaciologists, Swiss glaciers reached this day on June 29, one to two months earlier than average. A Charles University scientific team is currently analyzing meltwater from glaciers in Greenland. The team found a bacteria underneath Greenland’s Isunnguata Sermia glacier, which are consuming organic matter and producing greenhouse gases, including methane.
