Peggy Burkman, 64, visited the Johnston Partnership Food Pantry and Clothing Closet on the morning of July 9, wondering how she was going to make her allotted $100 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits stretch for the whole month. With tears in her eyes and a volunteer guiding her shopping cart around the pantry, Burkman described the hardships she's endured over the last year with federal changes to SNAP that were enacted as part of the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act." Burkman's daughter, Jami McNabb, 48, was able to take her to the pantry that day, which Burkman said has helped her immensely. McNabb also uses SNAP and said her benefits are not enough to last the whole month. The mom and daughter are just two cases of thousands of SNAP users struggling in the state, as well as millions nationwide, in the year since the federal changes to the food assistance program.
