The shooting occurred after Madison Police Department officers responded to the Marquette neighborhood for a report of a person who was stealing bicycles and checking vehicle doors, authorities said. The officers located the man, but he then fled on a bike.⁠ ⁠ The officers found the man again around 1:35 p.m. near the intersection of South Baldwin Street and Williamson Street on the city's east side.⁠ ⁠ Video posted to social media of the shooting showed what appeared to be four police officers in a physical struggle with a suspect in the intersection. A police car with lights activated pulled up next to the group, and seconds later, three shots can be heard ringing out.⁠ ⁠ During the struggle, the man pulled out a knife and injured an officer, authorities said.
