Thinking about today’s preaknessstakes and wanted to share this perspective I found fascinating from KentuckyDerby winner Golden Tempo’s trainer Cherie DeVaux and horse owner/racing manager Daisy Phipps. I loved sitting with both of them together for an upcoming podcast conversation to talk about the significance of Cherie becoming the first female trainer to win the Derby and Daisy carrying on her family’s legacy as a horse owner and breeder. In this clip, they share their take about their decision to have Golden Tempo skip the Preakness and point towards the Belmont and therefore give up a chance at the Triple Crown. It’s a decision several other Derby winners have made in recent years. For them, the conversation comes back to one clear priority - doing what is right for the horse.
