Sometimes saving an animal takes a helping hand. Sometimes it takes a whole excavator. An elk in Arizona fell upside down into a deep, narrow rock ditch, so tight it could barely fit and deeper than one of the rescuers was tall. It couldn’t get itself out. Arizona Game and Fish Wildlife Manager Matthew Binney got the call and came up with a plan on the spot. He sedated the elk, used some vehicle tow straps to rig a harness, and with a nearby excavator, carefully lifted the animal to safety. Once it was out, Binney reversed the sedative, made sure it was okay, and watched it run right off, safe and sound. Would you have known what to do here, or just called for backup?
