An Osprey’s right engine went up in flames on the ground at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Sunday evening. Marine Corps officials confirmed an MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor experienced a ground mishap around 6 p.m. on July 19. The right nacelle, the housing around the right engine, caught fire during startup while the aircraft was still parked. The pilots and aircrew conducted an emergency shutdown by the book and all personnel evacuated safely. Nobody was hurt. Mesa Fire & Medical Department responded with specialized aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment and used foam agents to smother the fire. A local pilot caught video of the engine housing fully engulfed while crews worked it. The aircraft came from Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266 out of Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina and was in Arizona supporting Exercise Savage Jackal, an Air Force led training exercise.
