More than 13 years after an experienced hiker vanished on a solo trek near the Grand Canyon, his remains have finally been identified. William Anthony Ott, a hiker and former river guide from Oregon, was dropped off for a planned 21-day solo trip near Mohawk Canyon on the Hualapai Reservation on April 5, 2012. He was due back around April 28 and was never seen again. He carried a GPS but no cell phone, and an intensive search across the rugged western canyon turned up almost nothing. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office says members of the Hualapai Tribe found human remains in December 2025, in the general area where crews had originally searched. This week, DNA testing by the Arizona Department of Public Safety confirmed the remains are Ott’s. No other details about the finding or his disappearance were released.
