I genuinely loved living in Vancouver. It’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world. But after 13 years there I moved back to Calgary and there were things that surprised me.
First is, the space. I pulled up to houses here and I could not believe what you get for the money. Like actual square footage, a garage, a backyard. After years of Vancouver pricing that genuinely felt unreal to me.
Second is, the sun. I forgot how sunny Calgary actually is. Vancouver is gorgeous but the grey winters are real. I got back here in the spring and I was like oh right, this is what 300 plus days of sunshine feels like.
Third is, the mountains are still right there. We are an hour from Banff. An hour. I forgot that was just a normal Saturday for people who live here.
Fourth is, how fast this city is growing. I came back expecting the Calgary I left and it is not that. The restaurants, the neighbourhoods, the new builds going up everywhere. It genuinely surprised me, a lot of this didn’t exist...
