Soup Joumou! 🇭🇹🤍 Soup Joumou is so much more than just a delicious meal. It symbolizes freedom, resilience, and Haitian independence. Historically, enslaved Haitians were forced to prepare this rich pumpkin soup but were forbidden from eating it themselves. After Haiti won its independence on January 1, 1804, the people celebrated their freedom by finally enjoying Soup Joumou together. Today, it’s traditionally shared on New Year’s Day as a celebration of liberty, strength, and community. I’m so grateful I got to learn how to make it with my amazing Haitian friend Candice and experience a small part of this beautiful tradition.
