A super generation of monarch butterflies does something extraordinary. They suppress a key reproductive hormone to conserve energy and live up to nine months – nine times longer than most monarchs. That extra time allows them to complete an epic migration of roughly 3,000 miles from Canada and the northern U.S. to the forests of central Mexico.
