It's one of nature's most extraordinary spectacles. Every spring, thousands of monarch butterflies take flight, filling the forest with orange and black. “Nature knows when to put on a show,” says butterfly guide Court Whelan. There’s a lot fewer of them than there used to be. The population in Mexico has declined 70% in the past 30 years. But there's encouraging news. Since our story aired last year, scientists tell 60 Minutes conservation measures are going in the right direction: one survey found that the monarchs covered more than double the forest area during this year’s hibernation season.
